My father-in-law uses Ubuntu i F-Spot

When I bought my new laptop, I decided to give the old one to my father-in-law (that is 65) in order to introduce him on computers. He had bought a digital camera (after two years in doubt) and he was in need of a computer to download and organize his photos.

I told him to install Ubuntu. but their friends, also photography lovers, told him to install Windows and Photoshop because they use them. I accepted, but rejected to do the installation, so their friends did it.

After some months using Windows, with messages that my father-in-law didn't understand, some hang up, and other issues, I told him to install Ubuntu and teach him to manage photos. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 (in Catalan) and show him how to use F-Spot.

I teach him the basic steps to begin working (how to organize photos and how to import them from camera), but in only 3 weeks he learned by his own to drop red eyes, cut and improve color. Now he is an expert in using F-Spot and he's very happy with it. The other day he created his first CD to print photos, about 400 from the 8.000 that he has in his data base.

This is the prove that Linux can be an alternative for people who wants to begin in computers.

The laptop has only 512Mb of RAM and 40Gb hard disk, but more than enough for my father-in-law.
